WITS Program 2024-25: Boosting Student Reading Proficiency

Sarah Hoppe KnightMission & Outcomes, Programs

We’re excited to share some great news from the 2024–25 student program year. WITS students made amazing progress in reading and built strong, positive connections with their mentors. Here’s a quick look at what we accomplished together:

Reading Growth That Stands Out

  • At the beginning of the year, only 41% of WITS students were reading at grade level; this is a considerable jump.

Students Love Reading More Than Ever

  • At the end of the program year, 91% of students said they enjoy reading, up from just 73% at the beginning of the program cycle.
  • WITS is helping build lifelong readers who are both confident and curious.

Mentorship Makes a Difference

  • 94% of students felt positive about the time they spent with their mentors.
  • These relationships extend beyond reading — students and mentors learn about each other’s interests, share stories, and create memories together.

“Reading with and talking about my life with my mentor is my favorite part of WITS.”

WITS Workplace Mentoring Student

Growing Individual Interests

  • 80% of WITS-K teachers noticed that their students had developed specialized reading interests by the end of the year, showing that kids are discovering what they love to read via their participation in WITS.

Mentors Also Feel the Impact

  • 88% of corporate and community mentors said that being a part of WITS gave them a true sense of purpose and fulfillment. These adults aren’t just helping students read — they’re growing as people, too.

WITS is more than a literacy program — it’s a community where students and mentors learn and thrive together. We’re proud of everything we achieved this year, and with your support, we can’t wait to see what we accomplish next!
