Alter & Stone Award
The Alter and Stone Award celebrates WITS founders Joanne Alter and Marion Stone. The award recognizes volunteers who have dedicated time, energy, and passion to help students work toward academic success. WITS honors Cboe Global Markets with the 2023 Alter & Stone Award for years of volunteerism in Chicago Public Schools (CPS).
Cboe & WITS
In 1999, WITS launched its first-ever Workplace Mentoring program in partnership with Cboe. Over the years, Cboe mentors have spent 165,000 hours reading and mentoring students at John B. Drake Elementary School in Bronzeville. And today, more than 500 mentors across 25 corporations are building classroom libraries for hundreds of CPS students and teachers.
“As a company with deep roots in Chicago and a long-standing relationship with WITS, we are honored to receive the 2023 Alter & Stone Award,” said David Howson. Howson serves as Global President of Cboe Global Markets. “Academic support, whether through access to resources, opportunities or mentorship, is invaluable in helping provide students with the skills needed on their educational journey. Cboe is proud to support the great work WITS does in the Chicago community.”
“Cboe helped WITS evolve into the organization it is today by becoming our first corporate Workplace Mentoring program partner, launching their 24-year relationship with John B. Drake Elementary in Bronzeville,” said Tena Latona, CEO of WITS. “Today we are now the largest activator of consistent corporate programming in CPS with 35 corporate partners, and more than 500 mentors serving 457 students.”
The Cboe partnership is aspirational. Through their unwavering commitment, they have provided an unbelievable 165,000 hours of literacy-based mentorship in the past 24 years. Cboe has played a critical role in helping our students see themselves in the stories they’ve shared together. Because of this, they have been embedding a love for reading, helping improve literacy and I daresay experiencing some joy along the way.
