Back to school

Across the country, major retailers are selling out of notepads, pens, and pencils. It’s back to school season! Many students are starting the new school year feeling confident about their summer accomplishments and ready to power through the next ten months of studying, reading, and learning with classmates. The same can be said for WITS. After all the hard work and planning this summer, we welcome the new school year with enthusiasm. Our dedicated team is excited to continue our mission of empowering students as readers to build stronger communities in Chicago.

Literacy has effects beyond reading

With only 46% of Chicago Public School students meeting reading standards, our volunteers and programs are needed now more than ever. As the state sets new standards and goals for education, community partnerships must be forged to ensure that our students are prepared. Studies show that literacy builds self-esteem and fosters active community members. WITS’ evaluation shows that 70% of WITS students exceeded the average reading level growth for third grade, which is widely recognized as a pivotal point in the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. These numbers indicate that the hard work of WITS mentors, teachers, staff, and investors is paying off. As we step into the new school year we remind ourselves of these important outcomes and the lasting effects they will have on our city in the future.
